Provide Information for *NEW* Band Alumni Data Base
Greetings from the UNC Band Office! Chapel Hill is coming back to life as the new semester is getting ready to start. The athletic teams have returned to campus and soon the Marching Band will begin preparations for what promises to be an exciting football season. We are also preparing for auditions for the Concert Bands and look forward to our first concert of the year on October 9. All indications are that the UNC Bands are going to have a great year!
The fall semester will include performances at six home football games by the Marching Tar Heels. They will also travel to East Carolina and NCState for performances and volunteer pep bands will go to the games at South Florida, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Butch Davis has created a new enthusiasm for football and as always, the band will do its part to support the team and organize the cheering efforts of the fans.
The Concert Bands will present two concerts in Memorial Hall during the fall semester. Featured on the first concert will be a new percussion concerto by UNC faculty composer, Stephen Anderson. The spring concert schedule includes a "Sousa" style concert in February and the final concert of the year will be on Sunday, April 20.
This year will be Dr. Votta's last year at Carolina; he will join the faculty at the University of Maryland in July, 2008. There will be special activities associated with the Apri 20 concert to recognize his service to UNC and the band program. Matt McClure is on leave this year to pursue his Doctoral degree and in his place, we are happy to welcome home Stephen Lytle ('91) who is serving as the Interim Assistant Director of Bands. Stephen is a former member of the UNC Bands and most recently has been serving as a doctoral conducting associate at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
We are very pleased with the initial results of the fundrasing campaign for the UNC Bands Excellence Fund. There will be another mailing sent this fall in hopes of increasing the funds available to assist with scholarships and other special needs.
As you probably know, we have been working with the GAA to update our listing of band alums and for the most part this process has worked well. Certainly, their assistance with the Band Alumni reunion has been great. We are still concerned that we are missing some folks and therefore, we have created our own Alumni Band Data Base. It is our hope that this resource will help us communicate better with our alumni. The system will rely on individuals self-reporting changes of contact information and since we are the only ones with access to the records, we hope to be able to keep our mailing list more current. Please take a moment and complete the data base registration form.
In closing, I would ask that you share this information with other former members of the UNC Bands who may not receive this mailing. We are excited about the future of the UNC Bands and we realize there is much to be gained from an active and involved Band Alumni group. You are always welcome to contact me at jfuchs@email.unc.edu or by calling (919) 962-5695. I hope you are still cheering enthusiastically for the Tar Heels and I look forward to seeing you the next time you make it home to Chapel Hill.
Best regards,
Jeffrey Fuchs
Director of University Bands
